    • Backstage Bar UTOPIA VISITED AUG 2015
74 Neil Rd (just adjacent to Tantric Bar), Utopia Map, 6227-1712, email. Roomy new digs next to Tantric (same owner) as of May 2015 for this long-running gay bar. Fri and Sat are particularly jam-packed, so if you want a good seat, get here early. The staff are very hospitable and drinks are reasonably priced. Backstage is so happening that you might well make your love connection here. Double shots all night, every night. Premium liquor, like Bombay Sapphire, is served here.

        Comments from Utopians:

"A bigger courtyard and a 2nd floor. Zabri is still there (great manager), plus the same crew albeit there are two new Indonesian bartenders, one of which is Fery. The sad face/happy face logo and the Broadway posters are still used. Now, there's a promo for Deperados tequila-flavored beer, S$60 for a bucket (5+2 bottles of beer). -- riverrobles, Jul 17, 2015

"Still a cosy bar for a chat and drink. A minor difference between new and old location is no balcoby and no view of the surrounds of the outside world to watch it go by (which will be missed). Major downside is earlier closing time of midnight (even on a Fri and Sat night). This is unusual when the local crowd would not start arriving at Backstage until around 10-10:30pm. When the staff were questioned, they said this was due to licensing. Not everyone wants to move to Tantric where there is a totally different crowd and no room because of overcrowding." -- O, May 16, 2015

"Backstage Bar has moved to a new location just two doors down from Tantric (the entrance is on the side of the building). The ambiance is hugely improved from the old venue. The new Backstage includes bars on 1/F and 2/F, plus a large outdoor courtyard. It has an earlier arriving crowd that will usually go to its sister bar, Tantric, later in the evening." -- white_sg, May 20, 2015

Dorothy's Bar UTOPIA VISITED AUG 2015
2/F 13A Trengganu St, Utopia Map, 9221-3448, email. LGBT and straight-friendly gay bar, right in the heart of Singapore's gayborhood. Refurbished and under new ownership as of 2015. The theme of the bar is - you guessed it - Dorothy and friends from The Wizard of Oz. The bar attracts a nice mix of local, expat and visiting gays, as well as being comfortable for women and straight friends. Aircon indoors and breezy balcony for people watching. The atmosphere is convivial, chilled, and flirty. Staff are friendly and make you feel instantly at home. Drop by for a superior cocktail, fine wine or favorite beverage. Utopia Member Discount

    • Tantric Bar UTOPIA VISITED AUG 2015
78 Neil Rd, Utopia Map, 6423-9232, email. Gay-owned and managed bar (same owner as Backstage Bar). Located in a beautiful heritage building with an open-air garden courtyard in front and a sophisticated lounge atmosphere inside done up in orange and red accents against velvety black. The music is a bit hotter here, definitely getting the crowd primed for later dance beats at the discos. Weekends groove to the deepest "deep house". The staff are cute as well as friendly and the courtyard has its own bar to keep the good times rolling outside as well as in. Double shots all night, every night. Premium liqueurs at very reasonable prices. Crowd is gay, but gay-friendly straights are also welcome.

      Comments from Utopians:

"May Wong's Cafe is the bar above Tantric, hence they have the same address, 78 Neil Rd, however the phone number is different: 6432-9232. If Tantric is noisy for you, just go uptairs to May Wong's and get some wine (you can buy it per glass or bottle)." -- riverrobles, Jul 17, 2015

"Dorothy's Bar is the newest gay bar in town. It's the bar that took over the old location of Backstage Bar in Chinatown. The address is 13A Trengganu St at the corner of Temple St, The rainbow flag is seen on the balcony. I've been there on weekdays - opens at 6pm and closes at 1am, then 6pm to 2am on Sat. Love the Jul promo, happyhour galore! Still the cheapest drinks in town! S$10 for housepours! Bartenders are hunks!" -- riverrobles, Jul 13, 2015

More mature crowd than Zouk, flashy and upmarket, mixed ethnically, mixed sexually. Often Thu nights is very happening since it’s Crew Night (air crew can bring in a guest for free)! Admission varies, but you also get into adjoining Zouk for free. Best to come here with a friend.
    • Zouk (mixed) UTOPIA VERIFIED AUG 2015
17 Jiak Kim St, Utopia Map, 6738-2988, email. Great music mix of progressive and techno most times. Often very organized about who's spinning on which dates. If you are interested in meeting gay folks Zouk it's best when there are guest DJs spinning, so check the schedule on their website and plan accordingly. Upscale, mixed crowd (be discreet). The fave dance club for many gays. Crowded on Fri and Sat. If you like Retro, Wed is the day (though not really that gay). Useful tip: when guest DJs perform, arrive between 7-9pm to get cheaper tickets (prices rise after 9pm).
