TAIWAN - Dec 8, 2003

AIDS and gay rights activists condemned ingnorant and thoughtless remarks made to the public by Taiwan Vice President, Annette Lu.

Speaking at an HIV/AIDS awareness event today, Lu blurted out: "Some said the reason why AIDS spreads is because God can not stand it any more. God felt it's time to mete out punishment, or there would not be any difference between men and animals."

Taiwanese men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, most of whom are not Christian or homosexual, were stunned and confused by their elected official's utter ignorance.

Trying to back-peddle on Lu's irrelevant personal views, the presidential office released a statement expressing regret and said that her remarks had been "misinterpreted".

God was not available for comment.
