AUSTRALIA - Dec 11, 2002

Australian Democrat, Senator Brian Greig, has urged Australian law makers to follow the British lead and recognize the registered partnerships of gay and lesbian couples.

Meanwhile the state of Queensland has just passed broad anti-discrimination laws and added legal protection for same-sex couples.

Every Australian state now has some form of legal recognition for same sex couples or has announced plans to add such statutes. However, at the federal level, Australia does not yet have national anti-discrimination legislation protecting its citizens from unfair bias based on sexual orientation.
