ULAANBAATAR -- area code (976-11)

General Information

The population of Ulaanbaatar is approaching 1 million (that's about 40,000 Utopians).

    Comments from Utopians:

"The people in Ulaanbaatar are extremely friendly. According to one statistic I read, 75% of the city is under 35 yrs of age. At night there are a lot of small bars and clubs open and they are eager for tourists to come inside. I happened upon one place and noticed a lot of young guys dirty dancing with each other and giggling. Also, I recommend that Western travelers do not rely on travelers checks. Only one bank in the entire city can cash them. American dollars and credit cards are far more useful." -- mroctober, Oct 8, 2005

Bars and Clubs

    • Westlife (mixed)
Gay friendly club located in Drama theater, just in front of the Central Post Office.

        Comments from Utopians:

"I went to Westlife. It was cool and very crowded." -- jasoncd, May 2, 2008

"Westlife does not have a gay scene. The best bet is to contact people through the Internet to find any night life here." -- UB23Boi

Meeting Places

      Comments from Utopians:

"When I was in Ulaanbaatar we met some guys at the Khan Brau by Sukhbaatar Square. They weren't shy but had no cash for drinks so we bought them a few rounds. They happily drove us around the city and outlying areas for a few days, and we all had a ball. My recommendation would be simply to appear approachable when out in town, and the ultra friendly UB'ers should do the rest!" -- peter25nz, Aug 24, 2004

"There is a cruising area nicknamed G&L Secret Street where local gays get together at night. It is on the east side of the state department store on the way to Ard cinema (west side of Ard cinema). These is a fountain in the middle of the street garden." -- June 3, 2004.

        Comments from Utopians:

"There is a new restaurant called Russian Troika owned by two very friendly gay Russians. While the affordable restaurant is mixed, it also has a VIP/Karaoke Room and a sauna specifically for gay men. Next month, they will also open a two-story gay/mixed disco with karaoke rooms. Mongolian and Russian are spoken by the staff, but many of the customers can speak English." -- joshuayyz, Jun 24, 2005.
