Bars and Clubs

HONG KONG ISLAND -- Central, Lan Kwai Fong

    • 37+
37 Staunton St, Central. The entrance is on the small alley at the back of the building, so you need to walk down the steps on the right hand side to Peel St and turn left into the alley beside Deja Vu (member club). A nice, cozy place with friendly staff, arty decor.
    • Club 97 (mixed)
9 Lan Kwai Fong (see map), Central, 2810-9333. Charming atmosphere, good service. Gay on Fri nights from 6-10pm and jam-packed! 香港中環蘭桂芳9號
    • Déjà Vu

    • DYMK Bar
B/F Eden Organic Restaurant, 16 Arbuthnot Road, Central, 2868-0626. DYMK (Does Your Mother Know?) is an 80s New York style bar. On Fri and Sat, Eden upstairs also opens as a late night gay bar. 中環亞畢諾道16號地庫
    • Volume
LG/F 83-85 Hollywood Rd (see map, corner of Aberdeen), Central, 2857-7683, email. Aberdeen side entrance is sometimes closed in which case enter at the back side of the club on the hillside staircase. This late night and after-hours cocktail and music venue has a nice mix of gay locals, ex-pats and visitors. Long J-shaped bar with table and couch seating around the space, VIP nook and even a small performance/dance area. Flashy kitch decor accents set the fun dial on high. Well-placed mirrors for preening and cruising. Beats range from drum and bass, to electro, uplifting trance, hard house, progressive house and occasional lashings of high camp mash-ups of 80s hits. Volume pumps up the latest tracks from around the globe.
    • Zoo
33 Jervois St (see map, at Mercer St), Sheung Wan, 3583-1200.

        Comments from Utopians:

"Zoo, where Rice Bar used to be, is officially open. It's chilled and relaxed, reasonably sleek and roomy (they got rid of the big bar counter that used to get in the way)." -- TheQueen, Jul 3, 2009

    Comments from Utopians:

"The rooftop bar and lounge of Lan Kwai Fong Hotel was a nice place for a easy drink. Very mixed crowd in which you could detect a good handful of young, professional gays who are ready for a conversation to start. Not gay, but very gay!" -- seeweggis, May 7, 2009

KOWLOON -- Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei

  • DESIRE Bar & Karaoke
14/F, Pearl Oriental Tower, 225 Nathan Rd, Jordan, Kowloon (MTR: Exit C1, Jordan Station), 2762-0088, email. Designed and decorated with a modern, sexy touch. The customers are usually gay locals with a few foreigners. Open daily from 8pm-5am. 九龍佐敦彌敦道225號明珠廣場14樓 (地鐵佐敦站C1出口)
  • Kangaroo Lounge

  • New Wally Matt Lounge
G/F 5A, Humphrey's Avenue (just off Nathan Rd, a few steps from the A-2 exit of the MTR), TST, 2721-2568, email. Very friendly neighborhood bar with a warm, pub-like ambience. It's a popular spot for a pint after work, and gets very busy after 9pm. There is a computer for those customers who want to check their email, or just surf the Net free. The crowd is a nice mix of locals who like foreigners, expats and visitors. Lots of smiles all around.九龍尖沙咀堪富利士道5A地下
  • Wally Matt Lounge
Lower G/F 72B Kimberley Rd, TST, Kowloon, 2367-6874, email. The original Wally Matt is still as busy as ever, with more of a Chinese clientele than its sister bar (see above). A lovely pub -- sort of postmodern Kowloon flavor, with Chinese poems about friendship inside glass blocks, set into brushed aluminum walls, and cast iron incense cones hanging from the ceiling. There is a lounge area, with tables and chairs, a large L-shaped bar. The staff are very friendly (and cute!). 九龍尖沙咀金巴利道72B號地庫

Discos

HONG KONG ISLAND -- Central, Lan Kwai Fong

    • Propaganda
B/F 1 Hollywood Rd (see map), Central, 2868-1316. When you get to the address, go down the steps and behind the building to find the entrance. The club is divided into a disco floor (very crowded on weekends and after 1am nightly) and a conversation bar. Busiest after the other nearby gay bars close. Stays open until as late as possible. Expensive. 香港中環荷李活道1號低層

        Comments from Utopians:

"I had a similar bad experience as danny74 in this horrible club. The place is run down, bad music, full of drunken locals, very unfriendly, and the entrance fee is HK$220. My friend and I couldn't stand it for even an hour. It's simply not worth the time and money." -- billylondon, Mar 11, 2009

"The entry fee for Propaganda is around HK$250 on a Sat night." -- Algy, Jan 7, 2009

"Propaganda was a big letdown. The venue is fine and if you get in free (go to Works bar Fri first) then it's OK; but be prepared for unfriendly staff, expensive drinks, and dull music that takes itself too seriously. The guy on the reception desk is seriously unfriendly, but you can often meet friendly local guys inside. Good place to meet local guys, but Propaganda don't try hard enough." -- danny74, Sep 9, 2008

    • Lab
3/F Allways Centre, 468 Jaffe Rd, Causeway Bay, 2838-1456. Friendly and trendy karaoke spot. 香港銅鑼灣謝菲道468號百達中心三樓
    • Search
2/F, Universal Bld, 230 Gloucester Rd, Causeway Bay, 2180-2939. 香港銅鑼灣告士打道230號宇宙商業大廈2樓
